A pile of cardboard boxes

By once a week I of course meant once every calendar week, not once every 7 days. Yeah. We’ll go with that.
Current brilliant feminist observations and ideas are being pretty well pushed to the bottom of my brain pool in order to make room for all of the cardboard boxes and friends-with-trucks-wrangling that goes along with moving, but here goes my best shot at an interesting blog post:

Things of note:
1. Hooray California! (you’ve all read the articles, I will let you choose your favorite.)
2. Hooray 3 female Supreme Court justices!!
3. The media is still attempting to connect Sarah Palin with some “new feminism” idea which is clearly in no way whatever connected to feminism. Also she’s terrible at yoga.

I am getting really burnt out on domestic violence as shock value or plot fulcrum. I understand the need to draw attention to this terrible cycle, but really Rhianna/Eminem? Haven’t we heard this from you both before? Furthermore, Rhianna aren’t you supposedly considering getting back with the man who beat the living hell out of you (and will again! And again after that!) making you a very difficult spokesperson for breaking the cycle of violence? “I’ve never seen this side of him…” yes honey, he knows that.

In the last week or so I have been on a hunt for a domestic violence awareness ad that doesn’t feature a series of beautiful women. From the British PSA featuring Kiera Knightly to your run of the mill awareness video, all the photos are of very pretty women with their faces mangled by violence. I hate that we have to put a pretty face on something to get people to pay attention. Less attractive women get beaten too. As do non-whites but that’s another issue all together.
Sorry for this ridiculously scattered post, but hey, habits got to get formed. Weekly habits!

About the Kiera Knightly ad, I get that she’s an actress so they made it like a movie set. But I think it is glamorizing the whole idea a bit too much. I get (sort of) why they are going with it, but I also think they should focus on the fact that this happens to regular people off the street.

Although, I do agree that more effort needs to be made about domestic violence happens to everyone… Its also true that our society believes that if you are gorgeous and wealthy, nothing could ever be wrong with your life. But sadly all kinds of abuse are often ignored for those very reasons. Its entirely a lose, lose situation. I want to see a video of a man being abused verbally and see how that goes over, because that definitely happens more than people realize.

Anyways, what I really wanted to say on here is: Kiera Knightly is hot.

    The end.

Domestic violence as plot (along with all its variations a la

The “pretty people in advertising/media” problem isn’t really simply resolvable. It has its roots in human evolution and we’re not going to start paying less attention to pretty faces and good skin anytime in the foreseeable future.
